Mil U and Nyu Yu Rescued the Country from an Imminent Crisis
Mil U and Nyu Yu, generals from the eastern area of the Koguryo Dynasty, had made contributions to rescue the country from an imminent crisis by displaying patriotism, bravery and self-sacrificing spirit, leaving their names on a page of history. In February 246, the aggressive forces of Wei Dynasty invaded Koguryo along the several paths, breaking through the frontline defence of Koguryo, and reached Feiliushui (the River Hon) line in August.
In October they occupied the Hwando Castle and continued to invade the inland area of Koguryo, pursuing King Tongchon.
When the King Tongchon and his companion, who were retreating towards the area of Southern Okjo (South Hamgyong Province), reached Juk Pass (presumed as Hwangcho Pass), great numbers of soldiers were scattered and few of them remained with the King.
At this critical moment, Mil U, in high spirits, led the death-defying corps, fought bravely to defend pursuing enemy troops, and frustrated temporarily the pursuit of enemies, and by this opportunity King Tongchon could gather the scattered troops together and get some sorts of control over the ranks.
Later, Mil U fell on the battlefield and was rescued by the Habu (western) origin man Ryu Ok Gu who was dispatched by the King.
Even when King Tongchon reached Southern Okjo, the pursuit of the enemies continued persistently, and in the south, the aggressive forces of Wei Dynasty led by Ryu Mu, Rangnang governor-general, and Kung Jun, Taebang governor-general, prayed to proceed northward.
When the situation kept going bad, Nyu Yu, with a grim determination, told his trick to the King Tongchon, and went to the enemy commander to give him food, pretending to have come to surrender deceitfully. And as the commander was about to take the food, he took out his knife hidden under the bowl and stabbed him with it, and died a heroic death.
It caused great confusion in the enemy troops who had lost their commander, and Koguryo troops attacked fiercely along three ways to drive out the aggressive troops, and thus won victory. Though the patriotic loyalty of Mil U and Nyu Yu was based on the feudal idea of loyalty, their reputation has been handed down through generations as patriotic generals of Koguryo Dynasty for their contribution to defending the destiny of the country and nation in the decisive battles.
